Upriver, quiet, and almost entirely fresh water, which changes what a detail here involves.
Deep River is about an hour from Milford, well up the Connecticut River past Essex and Chester. It is the furthest inland we regularly travel, and the trip is worth making for larger jobs or for several boats booked at the same yard.
The river here is broad, calm, and effectively fresh. Boats kept in Deep River are river boats in the full sense, and they face a different set of problems from anything on the Sound.
Where we work in Deep River and just upriver:
Owners often assume a fresh-water boat needs less work than a salt-water one. On the finish, that is not quite true. There is no salt load and very little marine growth, which is a real advantage. But the Connecticut River carries heavy silt and tannins, and tannin staining at the waterline is one of the more stubborn things we deal with. It bonds into the gelcoat rather than sitting on the surface, and light washing will not shift it once it has set.
The practical answer upriver is prevention. A sealed or coated hull resists tannin staining dramatically better than bare gelcoat, and a boat washed on a regular cadence never gives the stain time to set. Left alone for a season, a Deep River boat often needs two-step compounding at the waterline to come back.
The same packages we run across the shoreline. Restoration and seasonal work is quoted after a look at the boat.
