Old Lyme sits on the east bank of the Connecticut River across from Old Saybrook, about fifty-five minutes from us. Where the Saybrook side is developed and busy, the Old Lyme side is marsh: Great Island, the Black Hall River, and a network of tidal creeks running back off the main channel.
It is one of the prettier pieces of water in the state and one of the more productive. That combination is good for wildlife and hard on boat finishes.

The marshes around Great Island make this some of the most biologically productive water on the Connecticut coast, and productive water grows things on hulls. Combine that with the silt and tannin coming down the river and you get the heaviest, most set-in waterline staining we deal with anywhere in our range.
Boats kept in the creeks behind Great Island also sit in shallow water over mud at low tide, which adds a distinct stain of its own. On an Old Lyme boat we almost always budget extra time at the waterline, and we are usually straight with owners that an annual detail is not enough here. Either a coating or a recurring wash plan will save money over a few seasons.
