Niantic Bay is broad and open, and the river behind it runs through a fast, narrow inlet.
East Lyme, and the village of Niantic within it, sits about an hour east of Milford on Niantic Bay. The bay is broad, wide open to Long Island Sound, and relatively free of navigational hazards, which makes it an excellent and somewhat overlooked boating area.
Behind the bay, the Niantic River runs up past a railroad lift bridge with sixteen feet of clearance at mean high water. The inlet is narrow and the current through it can exceed five knots, so this is water that demands attention. Upriver it opens into Smith Cove, which is calm and protected.
Where we detail in East Lyme:
The difference between a boat kept out on Niantic Bay and one tucked up in Smith Cove is significant. The bay is genuinely open to the Sound, so bay boats take wind-driven salt spray constantly and the finish dulls faster than owners expect. That is the clearest case for ceramic coating anywhere on this end of our range.
Smith Cove and the upper river are protected and much calmer, but calm water is also less flushed, so film and grime settle and stay. Different problem, same conclusion: a boat here does better on a recurring wash cadence than on a single annual detail. The five-knot current at the inlet is worth mentioning too, because it means anything loose or poorly protected gets tested hard every trip in and out.
The same packages we run across the shoreline. Restoration and seasonal work is quoted after a look at the boat.
