Stonington Harbor Yacht Club sits in the harbour beside the Borough, the oldest borough in Connecticut, incorporated in 1801 and built on a narrow peninsula. The Borough holds the third largest collection of historic houses in the state, many dating from the mid-eighteenth century.
The harbour is shared with the last remaining full-time commercial fishing fleet in Connecticut, whose boats work out of the Fishermen's Docks on the peninsula.
Moored boats in an Atlantic-exposed harbour face the hardest conditions we deal with. A mooring gives no shade, no shelter, and full exposure from every direction, and Stonington's water carries a salt load that nothing further west matches. Fading here is fast and thorough.
The working fleet is the other factor. Commercial boats put diesel, fish, and bait residue into the air and water, and pleasure boats moored nearby pick it up. Non-skid with bait residue worked into the texture needs proper cleaning rather than a rinse, and a sealed surface releases it far more easily next time.
