Five Mile River, Scotts Cove, Long Island Sound

Darien is the smallest town on Connecticut's Gold Coast and about forty minutes from us. Its water is shared: the Five Mile River forms the boundary with Norwalk and Rowayton, and boats on both banks use the same channel out to the Sound.

The Five Mile River is only about 1.25 miles long from its upper reaches to the mouth, and it has eight marinas along its shore, almost all on the east side. Moorings line the channel for most of its length. It is a compact, busy, well-used piece of water.

A moored boat in the Five Mile River sits in water that runs between salt and brackish depending on tide and rainfall, and it swings on its mooring with no dock alongside to shade it. Fading here is even but thorough, and the waterline picks up a stain heavier than a boat kept out in open salt water ever sees.

Access shapes the job. Reaching a moored boat with equipment is not the same as walking down a dock, so the practical arrangement is usually to bring the boat in to a dock or club float for the work. Sailing is the dominant culture here, and sailboats bring their own set of jobs: non-skid that holds grime in the texture, gelcoat around hardware, and brightwork that needs a different hand than a powerboat's.
