Dauntless Shipyard, now part of the Safe Harbor network, is one of the two big full-service facilities on the Essex waterfront. It operates a Travelift and takes transient dockage, and Abby's Place serves food overlooking the boatyard.
Essex holds one of the most scenic harbours anywhere on the Connecticut River, and its three marinas between them cover just about any service a boater might need.
This far up the river the water is much closer to fresh than salt, which changes the waterline problem entirely. There is very little of the marine growth we deal with down on the Sound. What there is instead is silt and tannin staining, a distinct brown line that bonds into gelcoat and will not shift with washing once it has set.
Essex also has more wooden and classic boats than anywhere else we work. Brightwork and varnish on a classic hull is not the same job as gelcoat on a production boat, and we will say plainly when a piece of work belongs with the yard's finish carpenter rather than with us.
