Indian Harbor Yacht Club was founded on July 1, 1889 by a group of New York sportsmen, rising from the remains of the old Greenwich Yacht Club. It leased Finch's Island as a sailing base in 1892, developed the present property in 1895, and the clubhouse dates to 1921. The New York Times once described it as among the most influential institutions of its kind in the country.
It sits in Captain Harbor on the western Sound at 710 Steamboat Road, with guest and transient moorings served by the club launch. Membership is by invitation, and the club's own docks are typically not available to visiting yachts.

Most of the boats here live on moorings rather than in slips, and a moored boat is a genuinely different maintenance problem. It swings with wind and tide, takes sun and salt spray through a full 360 degrees, and has nothing alongside to shade it or break the weather. Fading comes on evenly but thoroughly.
Captain Harbor is open western Sound water, and moored boats out here are known to roll in a southerly. Access is the practical constraint: getting a detailer, water, and equipment out to a mooring is not the same as walking down a dock, so the usual arrangement is to bring the boat in to a float for the work.
