A deep working port with ferries, the Coast Guard Academy, and a river that carries real commercial traffic.
New London is about an hour and five minutes east, on the west bank of the Thames River where it opens into Long Island Sound. It is a genuine deep-water port: Cross Sound and Block Island ferries run from here, the Coast Guard Academy sits upriver, and there is commercial and naval traffic on the water every day.
That mix means recreational boats here share the river with vessels many times their size, and the harbor has the character of a working port rather than a resort.
Where we detail in New London:
Two things work against a finish here. The first is airborne fallout: a working port with ferries, commercial shipping, and naval traffic puts diesel exhaust and grit into the air, and it settles on horizontal surfaces overnight. That grit is mildly abrasive, and wiping it off dry is exactly how fine scratching starts in gelcoat.
The second is wake. Constant heavy traffic on the Thames means boats in slips work against their lines and fenders far more than they would in a quiet harbor, and fender rub marks along the hull sides are one of the most common things we correct on New London boats. Both problems respond much better to a regular wash cadence than to a single annual detail.
The same packages we run across the shoreline. Restoration and seasonal work is quoted after a look at the boat.
