Thames River east bank, Fishers Island Sound, Noank

Groton sits about seventy minutes east of Milford, holding the east bank of the Thames opposite New London plus a long stretch of Fishers Island Sound running east to the Mystic River. It is best known for the submarine base and Electric Boat, which give the Thames here a scale that no other river on our coast has.

The village of Noank at the mouth of the Mystic River is the part most boaters know. It is a working maritime village with several serious yards, and it sits in a genuinely excellent position for getting to Fishers Island, Block Island, and Newport.

Real exposure and real distance

Fishers Island Sound is more exposed than anything west of here. Groton and Noank boats get used for genuine passages to Block Island and Newport rather than afternoon runs, and they take weather accordingly. Salt spray on a boat that regularly crosses open water is a different order of problem from a harbor boat's, and it is the single strongest argument for ceramic coating anywhere in our service area.

Distance matters too, and we would rather be straight about it. Seventy minutes each way means a single small wash does not make sense out here. What does make sense is coating work, full corrections, and coordinated bookings where several owners at the same yard go in together. Talk to your dock neighbors before you call and the trip works for everyone.
