Mystic is about seventy-five minutes from Milford, near the eastern end of the shoreline we cover. The village straddles the Groton and Stonington town line along the Mystic River, and there is no other three-mile stretch of water in Connecticut with this many boatyards on it.
It is also the most maritime place in the state. Mystic Seaport Museum sits on the river with its collection of historic vessels and a working preservation shipyard, and the standard of boat care up and down this river is correspondingly high. People here notice a finish.

The Mystic River is narrow, heavily trafficked, and crossed by both a bascule bridge and a railroad bridge that hold boats up waiting to pass. All that traffic in a confined channel means constant wake, and boats in slips work against fenders and pilings far more than they would in an open harbor. Fender rub and dock marks along the hull sides are the most common thing we correct here.
The water is genuinely mixed, fresh coming down the river and salt pushing up from Fishers Island Sound, which produces a waterline stain that is neither purely growth nor purely tannin and tends to need proper compounding rather than a wash. Given the distance from Milford, Mystic work makes most sense as coating jobs, full corrections, or coordinated visits where several boats at one yard are booked together.

He is a hands on owner operator which I think is very important. He took the time to visit and advise as well as inspect the final work making adjustments as necessary. He knows what he is doing and he and his crew even properly prepped to protect neighboring surfaces, which most boat detailers are too lazy to do. My Experience with Matt's details was truly top notch! First off I called him very late in the spring and he came up with a way to get my Hull done to follow up with the super structure once in the water. This year I opted to go with not only a compound and seal but also went down the ceramic coating route in hopes of getting an extra year out of the job. First off his pricing is very competitive compared to few others I checked. Matts work was amazing and the boat looks brand new! Lastly, his communication was spot on. As with any spring/early summer project in New England, we had plenty of weather related issues. He kept me posted every step of the way, touched base with any reschedules, let me know when he got there, and lastly when he left.
